MSBGH COVID-19 & EMPLOYERS: Health, Wellbeing, Return to Work and Healthcare

Join us for our final COVID-19 and Employers Zoom Meeting Series where we will hear a national perspective on employers and how they have worked through the current pandemic and are planning for the future. Participants will learn more about the impact COVID-19 has had on the ever changing workplace - office and remote work along with the effect on worker health, wellbeing, and productivity. Participants will also learn about the many ways employers are implementing "Return to Work" strategies. The effects of COVID-19 on the business of healthcare and the healthcare industry will also be discussed.

Seth Serxner, Ph.D., M.P.H.

Chief Health Officer and Senior Vice President of Population Health, Optum

Seth Serxner brings the breadth of his experience in academia, industry and consulting to his role as chief health officer and senior vice president of population health for Optum. His versatile skill set ensures processes and outcomes that improve health for clients in all markets.

Seth came to Optum from Mercer’s Total Health Management specialty, where he served as partner and senior consultant for nine years.  During his tenure there he established himself as a national expert on behavior change, program design and measurement.

Seth earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a doctorate from the University of California, Irvine, where his research focused on health promotion and disease prevention in the school of social ecology.

He is currently on the Board of Directors of HERO (ex-chairman) as well as the lead for the organization’s research strategy. He is a board member of the Business Group on Health Institute of Innovation and Workforce Wellbeing, executive committee member and vice president of the C. Everett Koop Health Project and research committee member with Integrated Benefits Institute.  He is a reviewer for academic journals such as the American Journal of Health Promotion, Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine and Health Affairs.

J. Michael Parnell, PhD, RN, FACHE

For twenty-five years, James Michael Parnell (“Michael”) has been employed in the healthcare sector. Fifteen of those years have been in leadership positions and consultant roles to legislators and attorneys. As a registered nurse, he has served in both outpatient and inpatient settings. 

A native Mississippian, Parnell currently works for UnitedHealthcare as the Vice President for Total Cost of Care Strategies for the Gulf States & Mid-South regions. Prior roles have been in network and provider strategies for United Healthcare’s Community Plan where he worked with hospitals and providers to advance UnitedHealthcare’s Medicaid and CHIP programs. Before joining UnitedHealthcare, Parnell worked in executive roles in large health systems in Philadelphia, PA and Jackson, MS. His experiences span inpatient, outpatient, acute and post-acute clinical areas as well as large capital projects and service line growth. Parnell is a member of Grace Chapel Presbyterian Church, an active supporter of March of Dimes, the American Heart Association, Friends of Children’s Hospital, and the Thomas C. Dolan Executive Diversity Program (which aims to increase diversity among healthcare leaders). Parnell holds a Bachelor of Science in biology, Bachelor of Science in nursing, a Master of Science in healthcare management, and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Parnell’s doctoral work. and research center on organizational leadership and efficiencies in healthcare. Parnell is a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Phi Kappa Phi, American Nurses Association, Medical Group Management Association, is board certified in healthcare management, and a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives.
